Our Journey

The Ohio-Penn Federation 500 held its first 500-mile Federation race in 1993 from Williamsport, Kentucky, with 36 lofts competing and 326 birds entered. By 2003, participation had grown to 135 lofts and 1,900 birds flying from East St. Louis, Illinois.

In 1998, a 400-mile Federation race was introduced from Effingham, Illinois, beginning with 58 lofts and 539 birds. By 2003, that event expanded to 156 lofts and 2,133 birds.

In 2002, these races were honored as A.U. Sanctioned Races. The A.U. awards a distinguished trophy to the first-place winner, and both overall and sectional winners are recognized in A.U. Updates.

At the time of approval, a report was submitted to the A.U. outlining the structure and success of the program, highlighting how and why classic long-distance racing experienced renewed popularity across Northeast Ohio, Western Pennsylvania, and into New York State.

The Federation model was designed to provide meaningful competition and recognition at the club, sectional, and overall race levels.
